Q. With the adapter, is it connected with hot-hot-ground and the neutral wire left disconnected?
I just want to make sure that it doesn't damage the equipment or my generator.
A. First of all all generators are supposed to be grounded or bonded to the building. You will find a terminal on all generator frame to do this. The NEMA 14-50 has 4 wires (including the neutral wire) installed in it and the CS8264 uses all 4 wires connected to this receptacle. The fourth connection for the case ground is actually on the outside of the outer housing. The neutral wire is connected to the locking pin. Look for the metal flange on the outside to find the ground. When using a generator is is also important to only ask the generator to provide 80% of the run capacity of the generator. Example if I have a 12K surge / 10K run generator, I would only ask the generator to provide up to 8K of power. Some items that plug into a CS8264 do not even use the neutral wire. We see this a very common even on 240 volt single phase pressure washing motors and even some electric car charging cable. The neutral pin is just simply not used...
